What is Alligator?
Alligator is an Intelligent Control that helps maximises the power produced by Solar PV and/or a Heat Pump, in order to provide energy efficiency at the lowest cost possible.
This energy can be allocated intelligently to appliance loads, lighting, heating, cooling and refrigeration loads.
What does Alligator do for your energy consumption?
Domestic house example:
The graph above is a simplification of real data. The Red Line is an estimate of the normal electrical demand within the house between the hours of 6am and 10pm. The base load comes from fridges, freezers and other appliances left sitting on standby. In most homes this settles somewhere around 800-1000w. The peaks are Breakfast Time, School Lunch Time and Dinner/Evening time, when cooking, cleaning and other activities such as reading this blog may be taking place.
The Yellow Line is an estimate of Solar PV output in September, from a 2.5kWp system. It rises with the sun, increasing throughout the day up until a peak centres around midday when the sun is at its strongest. It then starts to taper off again towards the evening when the sun finally sets.
When compared to the red line, it is clear that there are periods of the day when there is a high output from the system but no load to absorb it. This energy therefore goes back out into the National Grid, over to your neighbor’s house and through their electricity meter. Which means this is energy that you do not get the benefit of.
Alligator minimizes this loss. The Purple Line is the Heat Pump or another load being called in by Alligator when power is available and there are no other active demands in the house. This fills the graph, maximizing the benefit you receive from your PV system, minimizing the loss.
